Youth Reproductive Health
WV FREE works across West Virginia to support youth in the pursuit of positive reproductive health choices. WV FREE is particularly proud of our work with the Sky’s the Limit Youth Summer Program, where students receive weekly lessons from the Reducing the Risk sexuality education curriculum. By empowering youth with information in order to help them make healthy choices, WV FREE hopes to build a generation of informed leaders who make positive choices about their own lives.
WV FREE’s Working to Institutionalize Sex Education (WISE) initiative has been working with school systems across West Virginia since 2012 in order to ensure that youth are receiving the information they need to make
healthy choices about their reproductive health. Whether hosting Let’s Talk Month in October or organizing trainings for health teachers, WV FREE seeks to empower schools to deliver age-appropriate, comprehensive sex education.
In March 2012, WV FREE and Planned Parenthood Health Systems joined a diverse group of 20 organizations across 10 states in the U.S. South to highlight the need for increased access to age-appropriate, medically accurate, evidence-based sexual health education through the release of a report from Auburn University, “Sexual Health of Young People in the U.S. South: Challenges and Opportunities.”
WV FREE and Planned Parenthood Health Systems also released a video: “Teens & Sex: The Status of Sexual Health in West Virginia” which features young people across the state of West Virginia sharing their experiences learning about sex and suggestions on ways to improve youth health.
